I know that poking holes in Trump conspiracy theories is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel, so it perplexes me how even a minority of people actually fall for his lies. It appalls me that there are elected officials in Congress who push Trump’s lies forward, knowing full well their falsity.
Let’s look at the Big Lie for a moment – that Donald Trump didn’t lose the 2020 presidential election by over 7 million votes.
According to Trump, there was massive voter fraud. Who committed that mythical fraud for which there is no evidence? That seems to vary depending on Trump’s mood. It was ANTIFA. It was Black Lives Matter. It was China. It was Italy. It was Hugo Chavez (who has been dead since 2013). It was the FBI.
In fact, once you get rid of the limitations of truth, the sky’s the limit in terms of how many possibilities there are.
Since losing the election, Trump has been waddling around his Florida country club babbling incoherently about the election being “stolen” by more people voting for Joe Biden then him. If only Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger had “found” more votes.
What’s hard to understand is that Trump and Trump Republicans (a different breed than Traditional Republicans) expect people to believe that this alleged phantom widespread voter fraud only affected the presidential race. But, if the ballots were fraudulent, every race on the ballot would be illegitimate. That would be logical, right?
Somehow that’s not how logic works in Trump land. Apparently, we are supposed to believe that when China sent over those bamboo ballots, they only affected the presidential race. The same ballots that Trump claims are invalid, are only invalid when it comes to one race and all the other results that put Republicans in office can be trusted.
The fact that we have two kinds of Republicans is clear. Trump Republicans like Wisconsin resident idiot Senator Ron Johnson and Representative House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy back Trump’s lies despite knowing full well they are false. They don’t care what America wants. To them serving in public office is not about representing the voters, it’s about selling their souls to the highest bidder and lining their pockets with lobbyist cash.
Traditional Republicans like Senator Mitt Romney and Representative Liz Cheney see a divide among the party. At the bare minimum they see Trump’s attempt to overthrow the government on January 6 as an impeachable offense and not something to be swept under the rug.
For now, the Republican Party is the party of and alleged sex offenders and fools who believe in Jewish space lasers. What happens next is going to be interesting.
Traditional Republicans like Senator Romney and Representative Cheney could branch off into their own party. How many of the voters who identify as Republican would follow suit? It might be a surprisingly large number. Hundreds of thousands of Traditional Republicans switched party affiliation after Trump’s coup attempt.
Ironically, Trump had intended to branch off into the “Patriot Party”, expecting Republicans in Congress to break ties with him after the January 6 insurrection. When he realized through some miracle that there were still allies in the Senate willing to back his lies, he dropped the Patriot Party idea and took the throne as Supreme Grand Poobah of the Republican Party.
I think it would be absolutely hilarious if Romney and Cheney took the Patriot Party name should they try to defect and form a new party. I think so many Republicans voting for a Democratic presidential candidate in 2020 means they aren’t satisfied with where the Republican Party is headed. They might embrace a new party.
As for the Cult of Trump that the Republican Party has become, their future is a bit less certain. It’s hard to predict the longevity of a political party whose core belief system thinks that the Democratic Party is a front for child sex trafficking cannibals.
Democrats have a majority in both the House and the Senate despite voter suppression and gerrymandering by Republicans. Leadership in the Democratic Party needs to take a stand now and do what’s right while they hold a majority.
- We must get rid of the filibuster.
- We need to pass voter’s rights and anti-gerrymandering legislation.
- We must expand the Supreme Court.
- We must establish Universal Healthcare.
People want these changes. Democrats have the chance to do it, and thereby guarantee those votes in 2022. Pussyfooting around now trying to be bipartisan does nothing but help the Republicans. It’s time for Democrats to do the job they were elected to do and pass these reforms.
Peace. Love. Trust.
