I’m getting very tired of Trump Republicans trying to rewrite history relating to the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the direction of Donald Trump.
At first, Trump Republicans tried to reclassify it from an insurrection to a riot. A riot by definition is “a violent disturbance of the peace by a crowd”. This suggests that such an event spontaneously happens. What happened on January 6 was a coordinated assault on the Capitol with the intent of overthrowing the elected government and installing a dictator in office. That, by definition, is an insurrection.
This rewriting of history starts small – little things like substituting the word riot for insurrection. It’s easy to overlook, but it’s a building block of a greater and even more sinister plot.
After successfully getting people to refer to the January 6 insurrection as a mere riot, Trump and his enablers in Congress are starting to characterize the violent and deadly insurrection in even rosier terms. They compared it to a “normal tourist visit.” In fact. Trump himself went so far as to say that his followers were hugging and kissing the police officers charged with protecting the Capitol.
In actuality, over 140 police officers were injured that day at the hands of Trump’s violent followers. We’re not talking about nicks and bruises. We are talking about broken bones, lacerations, and traumatic brain injury. That doesn’t include the loss of lives because of what happened that day.
It seems almost daily that we hear of new dark secrets of the Republican party regarding that day being exposed by our heroic journalists. Now we are finding out that there’s a link from dark money organizations to members of Congress and to the insurrection.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse summed it up in a letter to the c by saying, “The attack on the Capitol on January 6 was the culmination of a months-long disinformation campaign designed to allow President Trump to remain in office.”
In that same letter, Sen. Whitehouse points a spotlight on what the Republicans don’t want exposed – that public records show that the insurrection was funded by dark money organizations and they were aided by members of Congress and key figures in the Trump administration.
Dark money groups that have been linked to funding the January 6 insurrection include Women for America First, America’s First Policies, and Rule of Law Defense Fund (RLDF). Interesting names, aren’t they? Another Trump Republican tactic is to give a patriotic sounding name to their criminal activities.
Whitehouse goes on to identify Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, and Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama as being three key Trump Republicans involved in orchestrating the insurrection. Others involved in perpetuating Trump’s Big Lie that his brutal election loss by over 7 million votes was somehow tainted include Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
I applaud Sen. Whitehouse for his call for a thorough investigation into the link between these dark money organizations and Republicans in Congress who worked at their behest to overthrow the results of a free and fair democratic election and install Donald Trump as dictator.
There’s a reason Trump Republicans don’t want the January 6 Insurrection investigated. It appears more and more blatant that they were in on it. It appears members of Congress and dark money funders were active participants in the January 6 insurrection.
That’s why the 2022 midterm elections will be so important. If Republicans gain a majority in the House of Representatives, the Senate, or both – it could be all over for the rule of law. These investigations would never be completed. Republicans would just sweep them under the rug and focus their efforts even more diligently on installing Trump in the White House again 2024.
If you don’t want that to happen don’t just make plans to vote, make plans to encourage others to vote. Republicans have been busy jerrymandering voting districts to try to ensure their candidate’s victory. That’s why we must show up in mass to ensure we have a free and fair representation of the people and not that of corporate interests or hostile foreign nations.
Peace. Love. Trust.
