Donald Trump loves to brag about made up accomplishments.
Take, for instance, the time he had fake Time magazine covers printed with his picture on them. He framed them and put them on display at his properties to make his members think he was important. The publishers had to tell him to take them down or face legal consequences.
Then, of course, there are the many examples of him taking credit for the achievements of others. For instance, he bragged about creating the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, despite the fact that President Barack Obama signed it into law in 2014.
The list of Trump falsehoods is almost endless. As long as he can talk, rest assured the list of lies will continue to grow.
However, there is one record Trump can claim exclusivity to. Donald Trump is the only U.S. president to be impeached twice.
The first impeachment came after it was discovered that Trump was holding hostage congressional approved aid to Ukraine unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy would agree to manufacture a scandal involving then presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
Trump’s second impeachment came after he attempted a coup, instructing his simpleminded followers to attack the Capitol and stop the transition of power to President Joe Biden.
Biden had won the 2020 election by over 7 million votes, but Trump had been falsely claiming the election was stolen. However, multiple recounts have concluded the Biden actually won by a larger margin than originally thought.
In fact, Trump’s handpicked Attorney General, Bill Barr, issued a statement that there was absolutely no evidence of any widespread voter fraud that could have affected the outcome of the election. Like many of the things that come out of Donald Trump’s mouth, it is just another lie. However, this lie had massive consequences.
The violent insurrection on January 6 had Trump’s army of domestic terrorists erecting a gallows to hang Vice President Mike Pence for falling out of their Führer’s favor. Congress members had to be rushed from the chamber where the election results were being certified and barricaded in safety rooms to protect them from the vicious mob trying to overthrow the government.
Trump’s army caused millions of dollars of damage to the Capitol and severely injured 140 police officers. There were multiple deaths as a result of the worst domestic assault on American Democracy since the Civil War.
All of this happened because Trump has such a fragile ego that he can’t admit that he lost the election. He has the emotional maturity of a three-year-old, with his penchant for tantrums and lies. He knows he lost. He knows he’s a loser. But he thinks if he says it didn’t happen enough times somehow it will magically come true.
But the Republicans in the Senate made a terrible mistake. Following the lead of then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican senators voted not to punish Trump after his second impeachment. McConnell said Trump had learned his lesson and would go quietly into the sunset never to be heard from again.
But Trump didn’t go quietly off into the sunset. He got even more vocal with his Big Lie that the 2020 election was somehow stolen from him. And his simpleminded followers believed him, none more so than My Pillow crackpot, Mike Lindell.
The thing about Trump followers is that they can have the truth spelled out right in front of them, and they won’t believe it. In their minds, no matter what Trump says, it is the truth. It doesn’t matter how far fetched it is. If Trump says it, they are sworn to stand by it.
So, you had Trump bellowing that he was robbed of the 2020 election and a vocal minority (who like to claim they are in the majority) believed him. These are mostly the uneducated, working class, white supremacists from historically poor Red states. A vast majority of these followers receive social services like food stamps and housing assistance yet denounce the principals of democratic socialism as evil. They don’t understand the irony of their own idiocy.
It was given that mental midgets and racists would stay aligned with Trump, but that’s the extent that the Big Lie was going to take hold – or so one would think.
What happened next is the unthinkable betrayal of American Democracy. Republicans in Congress started echoing Trump’s Big Lie. Knowing full well that they are spewing lies, Republicans like Senator Ron Johnson and Rep. Kevin McCarthy are not only pretending that they believe Trump’s Big Lie, but they also insist that their constituents should believe the lie too.
Banned from Twitter. Banned from Facebook. Twice impeached. Trump was supposed to fade away, just a bad memory. Let the adults in the room clean up the mess Trump and his friends created.
But that’s not what happened. The Republicans gave Trump a pass on a coup attempt. As a result, he is convinced that he’s untouchable.
Now the Republicans are afraid to cross the monster they have created. They know anything short of total allegiance to Trump’s lies about the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection will result in an attack by the reality tv show huckster and failed businessman. They fear losing his base.
So now they’re trying to change the narrative on the deadly January 6 insurrection. Republicans are calling it a normal day and comparing the terrorists to everyday tourists. Or when they do admit that violence occurred, they say it was patriots and freedom fighters rising up against the unjust, not an attack on democracy itself.
In November 1923, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the German government. Rather than squash the rebels, the government gave Hitler what amounted to a slap on the wrist. Hitler used his nine months in prison to write Mein Kampf – a book that helped spread his toxic ideology.
Basically, unpunished for his first attempted coup, Hitler tried again. This time he successfully took control of Germany and launched World War II in his attempt to take over the world.
Donald Trump led an insurrection. Even without the testimony of people in Trump’s “war room”, the evidence simply from what was broadcast live on television proves Trump was responsible for the coup. McConnell’s promise that Trump would disappear quietly has not happened. The opposite has occurred.
We need to learn from history. We can’t let this modern Hitler named Donald Trump reclaim power. The next attempted insurrection may not fail.
Peace. Love. Trust.
